Usually, when my students ask me for extra credit, I am quick to say no...simply because it is common knowledge in my English classes that I do enforce a revision policy, which allows you to take an assignment that you may not have done so well on and re-submit it for a better grade. That being said, revising an assignment should always be your first option when you find that your grade could use some help. However, after much consideration, I have come to the conclusion that if you want extra credit in my class, you must provide evidence of extra learning.
Now, this opportunity should not only be taken advantage of by those of you looking to improve your grade. For those of you who are already satified with your grade in my class, this is your opportunity to challenge yourself and prepare for future learning.
Many of the options that you will have for extra credit assignments will be technology based. Being that we are in the 21st century, my goal is to prepare you for college and tomorrow's workplace and this invloves you learning more about how to effectively use technology in an academic setting. If you need technical assistance, please don't hesistate to ask. In all cases, if you want extra credit, you must talk to me about what you would like to do beforehand.
Here are your options...Create your own personal blog using Blogger.com or another free online program and post regular entries over an extended period of time. It doesn't have to be all about what we're reading, but more about what your interested in. As long as it's your thinking and writing. Post several times a week to earn credit and comment below with the link to your blog to share. Select an author from my homepage to research. Use Dipity.com to create a digital timeline of photos and facts about the author. Be specific and use credible sources to ensure that your information is relevant and correct. When complete, comment below with the link to your timeline to share. Work with a partner or a small group (doesn't have to be from your class period) to create and maintain a wiki resource on a novel that you are currently reading in class that includes information on the characters, themes, and some literary devices. Set up a page in wikispaces and continually add to it. You won't earn credit just for setting it up, but rather for maintaining it by continuously adding and revising the information to it. If you do this right, it could become a great resource for you when you write the final paper later in the unit. At the end of the quarter, comment below with the link to your wiki to share. Create something English class-related with Flickr or another free photo sharing site that allows you to do many interesting things with digital pictures. Be creative. Learn something about how to use it for an English class, do it, and then post your link to share your photos.
